Project 2

INSTRUCTIONS

TASK

In Task 2, we were asked to assess, investigate, document, and analyze the design principles of the artwork selected in Task 1, examining it we had to include a recap of the brief from the previous task, in 300- to 350-word visual analysis based on the notes given. Further we had to get three sketched improvement ideas with rationale for each, supported by visual references. We had to get weekly progress discussed with the lecturer and were required for regular feedback and approval.

"Fault Vision", Magdiel Lopez; 2024, A4, digital collage

I find this design very eye-catching as it has a creative and attractive merge of vibrant colors with different shaped elements and an imaginary idea. It has a futuristic and dreamlike feel that makes it interesting to look at. Another thing that makes this design attractive is the mix of textures and patterns. The faces are smooth, while the floral patterns on their bodies add a unique design while the cactus and mountains give the image more depth.

The artwork also has a strong sense of mystery as the glasses reflect light, hiding the person's eyes, which makes them look futuristic or anonymous. The way their bodies blend with the illustrated landscape symbolize a connection between humans and nature.

Overall, this artwork is exciting to look at because it combines different elements in a creative way. It blends technology with nature, realism with abstraction, and bright colors with deep meaning. The balance of colors, the unique composition, and the mystery behind the image make it a very interesting and beautiful design.

Phase 1: Observation
At first glance, this artwork feels dreamlike and surreal. It features two people a man and a woman standing back-to-back, their faces blending into each other through a smooth gradient of warm and cool colors. Their glasses are completely white, almost as if they are blocking out their eyes, which gives a sense of mystery or detachment. Behind them, the background showcases a desert landscape with towering cacti, a sky that shifts from warm peach to deep blue, and two glowing celestial bodies resembling the sun or moon. The lower part of the artwork transforms into a silhouette of mountains and more cacti, adding depth. Scattered across the piece are abstract elements like circular floral patterns, thin white and orange lines, and star-like symbols. There is also some small, subtle text in the lower right corner, blending into the scene.

Phase 2: Analysis
This artwork is carefully structured to guide the viewer’s eye. The two figures serve as the main focal point, positioned centrally to create balance. Their color contrast one leaning towards warm orange tones, the other towards cool blues suggests a sense of duality, perhaps opposites or two sides of the same person. The background, with its desert setting and large celestial elements, adds to the surreal and cinematic feel. The use of double exposure, where elements fade into each other, makes the entire composition feel fluid and seamless. The circular floral patterns subtly echo the shape of the glowing suns, creating repetition and unity. The small text at the bottom blends in softly, making it feel more like a whisper rather than a dominant part of the design.

Phase 3: Interpretation
This piece seems to explore themes of identity, connection, and transformation. The way the two figures blend into each other could symbolize shared experiences, unity, or even a sense of losing oneself in another. The absence of visible eyes might suggest introspection, anonymity, or seeing the world differently. The desert landscape often represents solitude, self-discovery, or resilience, reinforcing the reflective nature of the artwork. The dreamlike colors and abstract shapes make it feel otherworldly, as if the figures exist in a space between reality and imagination. Overall, the piece evokes a deep sense of emotion perhaps longing, reflection , or personal evolution leaving room for the viewer to find their own meaning in it.

IMPROVEMENTS

SKETCH 1

Rationale: Firstly i have removed the background on the design so that the image is more emphasized of the portraits. I also changed the element inside the portrait to represent how nature calms down one. I have uses different shades of green in this sketch to create a calm but mysterious mood. The double exposure effect combining the figures and nature helps us understand the importance of nature in our life and also how we all unite under nature. The glowing glasses make it seem like they are deep in thought, looking at something only they can see. The landscape inside their bodies represents emotions, memories, or hidden thoughts that only they know of. The bright moon in the background contrasts with the darker parts, making the image more deep and thoughtful.

SKETCH 2

Rationale: I have removed background for this design too to emphasis on the portrait but this sketch work adds more colors, patterns, and background details. The desert, cacti, and flowers bring a symbolic meaning—growth, loneliness, and strength. The sketchy faces in the background suggest different personalities or hidden identities. The text, "Who Am I When No One’s Watching?", makes the viewer think about who they really are when alone. The mix of warm and cool colors inside the figures shows an internal struggle, making this design more emotional and layered.

SKETCH 3

Rationale: I have emphasized on the figure for this sketch too, but this final design sketch is more colorful and energetic as it gives a very hypnotizing movement effect in the background. The wavy background gives a feeling of changes. The bright and glowing colors inside the figures make them look surreal and dreamlike. The desert, cacti, and patterns are still there, but now they feel even more expressive. This version represents the journey of discovering yourself without limits or expectations.

FEEDBACKS

WEEK 3: We finalized Task 1 and began sketching ideas for Task 2 to consult on our progress. I sketched out 2 rough design ideas and got them reviewed, while Mr. Fauzi helped me develop the third idea and suggested me critical changes to improve my other 2 sketches. He also clarified my confusion about the assignment requirements and guided me on how to proceed.

WEEK 4: I started digitalizing the rough sketches because they were difficult to understand and too clumpy, which I didn’t want to submit. So, I created much more refined sketches using Photoshop. I got my 3 designs reviewed, and Sir selected one of them. He also suggested a few changes to enhance its meaning and make it more visually appealing for the final submission.

WEEK 5: I implemented the previous feedback and finalized my design for the final submission.

REFLECTION

This project was really interesting as it helped me improve my ability to analyze visual elements and apply design principles effectively. By studying the specific artwork in detail, I learned how to observe minor things more critically. Further sketching out ideas for improving the existing design pushed me to think creatively about enhancing a design. However, I faced some challenges on the way, such as come up with sketch ideas which looked more attractive creatively and also had meaning behind it, also finding relevant visual references and avoiding unintentional similarities was really tricky. The weekly feedbacks from my tutor helped me understand my strengths and areas for improvement, especially in sketching out new design. Overall, this task deepened my appreciation for visual design and strengthened my ability to express my ideas clearly.
