INSTRUCTIONS
TASK
For Task 1, we were asked to explore key design principles and the
relation between word and image. I further had to select an original art
or design work that interests me, and upload it along with details of the
artwork and its source. I had to explain my reasons for choosing the piece
and describe how the specific design principles are demonstrated within
it. Additionally, I had to document and include the weekly feedbacks
received.
ARTWORK

I find this design very eye-catching as it has a creative and attractive merge of vibrant colors with different shaped elements and an imaginary idea. It has a futuristic and dreamlike feel that makes it interesting to look at. Another thing that makes this design attractive is the mix of textures and patterns. The faces are smooth, while the floral patterns on their bodies add a unique design while the cactus and mountains give the image more depth.
The artwork also has a strong sense of mystery as the glasses reflect light, hiding the person's eyes, which makes them look futuristic or anonymous. The way their bodies blend with the illustrated landscape symbolize a connection between humans and nature.
Overall, this artwork is exciting to look at because it combines different elements in a creative way. It blends technology with nature, realism with abstraction, and bright colors with deep meaning. The balance of colors, the unique composition, and the mystery behind the image make it a very interesting and beautiful design.
This artwork uses several design principles such as:
1. Gestalt Theory
It is the overlapping figures, blended colors, and layered elements which creates a sense of unity. The way the desert landscape merges with the figures makes us see them as a single composition rather than individual pieces.
2. Contrast
There is strong color contrast between the warm and cool tones. The dark silhouettes of the mountains and cactus stands out against the glowing pastel background. There is also contrast in texture as some elements are smooth gradients while some are sharp floral patterns.
3. Emphasis
The glowing glasses, the faces, and the bright sun in the background are focal points that immediately draw attention. The use of light around these areas highlights their importance more specifically.
4. Balance
The composition is well-balanced as the two figures are symmetrically placed and overall the artwork has asymmetrical elements.
5. Repetition
The repeating floral patterns inside the figures and the repeated cactus shapes throughout the image create visual consistency. The repeated use of curved shapes also unites the composition together.
6. Symbol
The glowing ring represents energy, connection, or transformation. The hidden eyes behind the glasses create a sense of mystery or anonymity. The desert landscape inside the figures might symbolize an internal or emotional connection to nature.
DESIGN PRINCIPLES
-
Gestalt theory: It naturally groups elements into layouts
which helps us make meaningful visuals. This helps our brains automatically
see meaningful wholes and not seperate parts, making designs easy to
understand.
Chapter 3: Gestalt Theory - Chris Brejon
-
Contrast: It is a visual technique that uses contrasting elements such as color, size,
texture, shape, etc to draw attention to a certain parts of the
design.

-
Emphasis: It is a strategy that draws viewer's attention to a specific element of the
design using contrast, shape, line breaks, etc.

-
Balance: It is an arrangment of visual elements in a way that makes them feel
balanced and connected, so that they create a sense of harmony in the
design. It is both Symmetrical (Elements on both the sides from the
central axis of the design are mirrored and equally
balanced) and Asymmetrical (Elements are of different sizes,
shapes, or colors creating a balance).

-
Repetition: In this similar or identical elements are used throughout the design to create
a rhythm and pattern within the design.

-
Movement: It is a way to guide the viewer's eyes around the
design in a specific movement. This movement is acheived by shapes,
forms, lines, etc.

-
Harmony & Unity: It creates a sense of balance and order in the composition. Whereas in
harmony, all the elements fit together but looks monotonous, and unity
is the repetition of the same element throughout the design.

-
Symbol: It is used to represent something and helps convey information through signs, shapes or objects.

-
Word and Image: It uses the right images and text to make messages clear and appealing. Relevant pictures and well-placed words help people connect and understand better.

Week 2: I started with understanding the assignment and then creating a blog according to the instructions given. Later researched on the design principles and noted it down in the blog with suitable examples for each. I got my blog reviewed till here and it was approved and i was asked to proceed to the write ups and to put the write up task on the top of the post.
Week 3: I researched on the second part of the project and made the changes according to the previous feedback. This week i got my final blog reviewed.
REFLECTION
This task deepened my understanding of design principles and helped me know about new designers while exploring different artworks. It was a really interesting project, but I also faced alot of challenges in selecting a particular design as there were so many options and identifying its original designer was really difficult. Choosing just one design was difficult, but after researching alot, I finally settled on a specific artwork. Furthermore, weekly feedbacks were extremely helpful in guiding me through the assignment and enhancing my understanding. This assignment strengthened my ability to critically and creatively engage with design principles, learn about their impact in different artworks.
