TASKS

PROJECT 1: Proposal

For this project, we were divided into groups of 6 and had to start the assignment by developing a proposal exploring the topic "Everyday Design" by analyzing how design elements in daily life reflect and influence one's culture, behavior, and identity. The task involves conducting visual research and generating at least three design ideas, each supported by a short rationale and detailed sketches. Finally had to create a PowerPoint proposal and had to present it for submission.

PROJECT 2: Field Study

For the task 2 we had to continue our previous assignment by collecting  and documenting visual, oral, textual, and tactile artefacts related to  Everyday Design to support our project 1 proposal. Using methods such as observational studies, interviews, and online or physical research, we had to gather information. Each information had to be properly preserved and recorded with descriptions which would help us in the next project.

PROJECT 3: Final Project

Further for the final task we had to create a TikTok page as a cultural journal to document and creatively present our experiences, observations, and insights on Everyday Design throughout our previous researches. After completing our previous tasks, we had to use short-form videos to communicate our chosen cultural topics to a broader audience.

PROJECT 1 - PROPOSAL (WEEK 1 - 3)

Weekly plan

WEEK 1: First week was an introduction week during which we were given an overview of the assignment and a briefing on the module booklet. Additionally we were required to form our group and interact with team members to know eachother better before beginning our work together as a team.

OUR GROUP MEMBERS:
1. Group leader - Subhana Salim
2. Sara Patel
3. Brendan Fedya
4. Nikolas Shah Hannah Abdullah
5. Chika Clarissa Widjadja
6. Christopher Jayson Tan

WEEK 2: Second week we met together to come up with a topic to go with. After researching on different aspects we finally decided on effects of Westernisation on Malaysian restaurants. We ended up researching on different aspects under this topic. We also started working on project 1 proposal. We decided working on 3 major aspects influenced by westernisation which were food, menu and uniform.

WEEK 3: We got our idea approved and further designed the PowerPoint presentation with all the researched information and presented it for the final submission of task 1.

My contribution for Project 1

For the first project, we divided into pairs within our existing group to make the work easier and faster. My partner and I were assigned to work on the logo and uniform design.

I chose to focus on sketching the uniform design. After conducting a lot of research work on both Western and Malaysian uniforms, I aimed to merge both the styles perfectly. After numerous trials and errors, I finally developed this uniform design sketch. For the uniform design i included Western elements like the shirt, vest and pants. Whereas for the Traditional Malay influence i went with the Traditional Malay headgear called Songkok and the waist cloth called Kain Samping with Batik patterns.

Further, I applied the uniform design on a blank mannequin to better visualize how it would look on the waiters in the restaurant. Here is the sketch of the mannequin wearing the designed uniform.

Final Submission

Finally, we compiled all our research, including the three design ideas, sketches, and TikTok concepts, into a PowerPoint presentation which we later presented within 10 minutes, explaining our ideas in detail.

PROJECT 2 - FIELD STUDY (WEEK 4)

Weekly plan

WEEK 4: For this part of the project, we were given only one week to complete all our fieldwork and data collection. We began by searching for nearby restaurants and ultimately selected three that were in the same area, budget-friendly, and each had its own specialty.

The first was Nasi Kandar Pelita, an authentic Malaysian restaurant. The second was Canai Cafe, where we specifically went to try Roti Canai and Roti Pisang. Lastly, we visited Jibril, a westernized Malaysian restaurant. We tasted different dishes at each location such as Nasi Kandar and Nasi Biryani at Pelita, Roti Pisang and Roti Canai at Canai Cafe, and Butter Chicken Chop Pasta at Jibril. In addition to tasting the food, we also recorded our reviews and reactions to each dish and the overall experience for our final TikTok video.

OUR DATA COLLECTION METHODS:
  1. Observation: We visited the three selected restaurants and closely observed their environment, waiter's uniform, ambiance, menu, overall experience, how the food was served and how did it taste.
  2. Review: After tasting the food we all shared our opinions on the environment, food taste, if we liked it or not, would we prefer eating there or not, etc which were also recorded for our TikTok.
  3. Documentation: We captured videos and clicked pictures of the food, restaurant and our reactions which were later documented for PowerPoint presentation.
  4. Interview: We conducted self interviews were we asked each other few questions regarding our overall experience and personal interests.

Final Submission

Additionally, after completing our data collection we documented everything into a PowerPoint Presentation for final submission of project 2.

REFLECTION

PROJECT 1: This project was the beginning of the semester, and I was really excited to meet and work with new people for the entire semester. I learned the importance of teamwork and research, as it helped me alot  in developing a strong proposal. Our group had a great understanding and since we were all from different countries, we brought diverse ideas, which made the experience more interesting and insightful. Choosing a topic was particularly engaging because it was something we see daily but had never observed in such detail. It required a lot of discussion and brainstorming to get to the core of the topic, which helped improve my critical thinking skills. I also realized how much design is present in our everyday lives but it is something we often overlook due to our busy schedules. We usually don’t pay close attention to everything around us, but this project made me appreciate how meaningful and interesting our surroundings are. Structuring our research into a clear and well-supported proposal was challenging, but it taught me how to organize ideas effectively and communicate them in a structured manner. Additionally, it strengthened my teamwork skills, as we all had unique and diverse design ideas but needed to agree on one that best suited our project while ensuring everyone felt heard. Presenting the final PowerPoint was also a challenge, as we had to keep it under 10 minutes which requiring several retakes. However, this process ultimately boosted my confidence and improved my ability to explain concepts short and clearly.

PROJECT 2: This was one of my favorite parts the entire assignment as i was trying Malaysian cuisine for the first time along with that i got to visit different restaurants with friends. It was a really interesting part of our assignment which was more like a practical learning experience. Instead of just reading articles, we got to observe real-life design elements, and experience everything personally. One of the biggest challenges was collecting detailed observations in a short time while also making sure we documented everything properly through photos and videos. Trying different dishes and comparing restaurant environments made the research more engaging, and discussing our experiences helped me develop a better understanding of how minor things reflect on the overall experience. This project also taught me the importance of observation skills and also strengthened by confidence of getting recorded and reviewed.

PROJECT 3: Lastly it was the final part of the assignment. It was really exciting as it allowed me to be creative while also applying everything I had learned but also challenging as it was the final submission. Creating TikTok videos was a fun process as we experimented different edits, but it also came with challenges like technical errors, syncing voiceovers, and making sure the content was engaging to the audience. I learned how to structure videos, use storytelling techniques, and create visually appealing content. Promoting our videos on social media boosted the digital engagement. This project not only improved my technical skills in video editing and presentation but also taught me how to simplify complex ideas in a way that is both informative and entertaining. Finally the presentation again helped me with my confidence and communication skills. It went a bit off in the start as i got sick in the start of the final project but i somehow managed to get everything done in time, this helped me a lot by strengthening my time management skills.
