REFLECTION

This assignment helped me alot as it provided a strong foundation in the fundamental principles and technical usage of Photoshop in digital matte painting. Through a series of exercises, I was able to develop both my artistic observation skills and my technical skills in Photoshop.

The perspective study helped me understand how depth is constructed within an image. By analyzing and recreating different perspectives, I learned how accurate perspective contributes to creating believable environments. The composition and value studies further strengthened my understanding of visual storytelling. These exercises taught me how to arrange elements effectively within a frame and use value contrast to guide the viewer's attention and establish mood.

The virtual plein air exercise encouraged me to observe real-world lighting, atmosphere, and environmental details. It improved my ability to simplify complex scenes while maintaining their visual essence. This exercise also enhanced my understanding of color, light, and atmospheric perspective, which are essential skills in matte painting.

In addition to the artistic studies, the assignment introduced several technical Photoshop practices. The sky replacement exercise taught me how to integrate different photographic elements while maintaining consistent lighting and color balance. The 2.5D matte painting exercise gave me insight into how layered images can create a sense of depth and movement, preparing me for more advanced matte painting workflows. The invisible set extension exercise was particularly valuable as it demonstrated how matte paintings are used to seamlessly extend environments and create the illusion of larger spaces without drawing attention to the modifications.

Overall, this assignment helped me build a solid understanding of both the artistic principles and technical processes involved in digital matte painting. It improved my confidence in using Photoshop and provided essential skills that will support more complex projects throughout the module.
