Rationale (200 words):
Decisions Made in the Design
This final artwork “Lost in Dreams” is a digital collage exploring
the topic of dreams. It is derived from Magdiel Lopez's artwork "Fault
Vision". This artwork required a lot of decision making such as
removing the background elements to make it more emphasized, creating
double exposure, highlighting the glasses, adding text an also
creating a theme. All these decisions got to an interesting change
from bright colorful artwork to a completely different and emphasized
art.
Meaning/Purpose of the Design
The design represents the connection between dreams and reality,
showing how thoughts can trap us in a loop. The two figures symbolize
people who are connected but also lost in their own thoughts. The
landscape within them represents emotions, while the vibrant glasses
suggest delusion. The overall message is to highlight the deep
connection of dreams.
Design Principles Used
The composition is balanced as the figure composition is placed in
the center attracting the viewer’s eye. Contrast and emphasis are used
in the glowing glasses and hypnotic patterns to create focal points.
Unity of color is applied throughout the design to make the artwork
visually effective. Lastly typography helped emphasis on the overall
theme.
REFLECTION
What have I learnt in this module?
This module was really interesting and knowledgeable as it
allowed me to experiment, explore and apply different design
principles in creative methods. It got me a strong hold on the
core design principles which helped me understand the
importance of composition. Through this assignment i learnt
how to break down and change an existing artwork. I now
understand how different elements influence meaning, mood, and
effectiveness in design. Through this projects i applied my
knowledge of digital collage, photo manipulation, double
exposure and typography enhancing my ability to create
well-balanced and aesthetically pleasing compositions. It
improved my skills on Photoshop as this required a lot of
trial and errors. Additionally, many tasks required me to
think critically and creatively for experimenting and finding
the best design. Each task pushed me to explore different
visual approaches to make it look better. Lastly, weekly
feedback helped me understand new things each day by
personalized feedbacks and even by looking at other
classmate's works.
What did I enjoy the most? What did I not enjoy the
most?
One of the aspects I enjoyed the most was experimenting with
the mood of the artwork. How changing the saturation and
contrast of the artwork was completely changing the meading
and the atmosphere of the design. I also found the
typography experiment really enjoyable because it required
me to explore different fonts to fit in perfectly with the
overall layout. Moreover, working with Adobe Photoshop
enhanced my digital design skills, making me more confident
in using different tools for future projects.
However on the other hand, there were aspects that I found
challenging. One of the most difficult parts was the
theoretical analysis of design. While I enjoyed visual
analysis, writing it down in an academic format required
extra effort. Additionally, time management was a challenge
as this was a short semester so I had to balance multiple
projects while ensuring that each one met the required
standards. Another difficulty was dealing with technical
issues with several tools. Despite these challenges, I love
to see the change from the original artwork to the improved
one.
What have I learnt about myself through this
module?
Through this assignment, I have learned a lot about
myself as a designer. I discovered that I enjoy playing
round with the mood of an existing artwork. I also
realized that I have a strong visual storytelling
ability, as I created an artwork that conveys meaning
and emotions. Additionally, I learned that I work best
when I get things approved and reviewed constantly and i
even take criticism really positively. At the same time,
I recognized that I need to improve my write ups because
i enjoyed designing but i struggled a lot when it came
to writing down the rationale and reflections. I also
realized i am quite good time management and problem
solving skills as i handled multiple projects together
efficiently.
What has changed and what has not in my learning
journey?
Looking at my learning journey, some things have
changed while others have remained the same. My
approach to design has evolved; I now apply design
principles more consciously as i understood it's
importance. I have also become more confident in my
digital design skills, particularly in Photoshop
after so make sketch ideas, trial and errors.
Furthermore, my understanding of composition has
improved after making the digital collage, as
I now pay more attention to how elements interact
with each other within a space. However, my passion
for creativity and designing remain unchanged, and I
still enjoy experimenting with different themes and
tools. I continue being comfortable with
digital design.
What are my aspirations?
This module has also helped me define my
aspirations for the future. I want to continue
enhancing my digital design skills. Since I was
introduced to designing, I am now more
interested in learning about different forms of
compositions and layering for visual
storytelling. Additionally, I want to develop a
strong portfolio that showcases my skills in
typography, photo manipulation, and strong
theoretical knowledge. In the long run, I aspire
to work on real-world design projects, whether
through collaborations, freelance work, or
internships. I want to end up being a successful
and rich designer in future.
Overall, this module has been both challenging
and rewarding. I have gained valuable knowledge,
improved my technical abilities, problem solving
skills, time management and discovered more
about myself as a designer. Moving forward, I am
excited to continue experimenting, refining my
skills, and exploring new creative
opportunities.
